Tallinn Tallinn, the largest city and capital of Estonia (population 440 000). 's Keskturg started the transition to more environmentally friendly packaging in the spring, and 90% of the traders in the main square of the market should now use them.
Rain Pärn, manager of Keskturg, a member of the Astri Group, notes that it took several months to find suitable solutions for product packaging.
Ranet Roositalu, the young owner of Joosep farm, states they started using cardboard boxes for berries with their farm logo on the market in 2017. They have continuously increased the selection. "Somehow, this plastic institution has to be reduced, and changes in consumption habits are taking place gradually. At the moment, the roots go in a biodegradable bag, and the berries-mushrooms in a box." Astonishing as it is, some people came to the market with the box from the year 2017.
Keskturg recommends that customers visit the market with their reusable packaging since using one's packaging does not have to be biodegradable. The package can be a glass jar or cloth bag, but also a plastic box or plastic bag.
The eagerness to go along with the changes varies between different sellers, Pärn admits. Some welcome the changes with great approval, while others remain hesitant. The end of cooperation has not yet occurred due to the replacement of non-biodegradable packaging.
According to Pärna, the transition to compostable packaging is also underway at Balti Jaama Turu, which also belongs to the Astri Group. He says that The European Union is moving towards banning single-use plastic packaging, we would rather contribute now, and in the long term, it will be easier later.
The price for biodegradable packaging is somewhat higher than the non-compostable. Due to this, some sellers are hesitant to take them into use, as the price would have to go up. Some merchants have added the package cost to the products, while others point out the package prices and add them to the cost of products.
In other markets of larger cities, the opinion prevails that the merchants must meet the requirements of the Packaging Act and that compostable materials are favored but not required.
Tallinn Tallinn, the largest city and capital of Estonia (population 440 000). 's Keskturg will open its completely renovated market building for the summer season of 2026 at the earliest.
