On Saturday, November 12, before Father's Day, the zoo invites all fathers with their children to a strix day. At the discovery station and on the tour, zoo staff will introduce nocturnal birds of prey and confirm or disprove the legends associated with the mysterious owls. On the same day, admission to the zoo is free for all children up to 19 years old.
On Kullimäe, surrounded by the Veskimetsa forest, you will be part of a versatile and engaging program on the day of strix. The bird watching tours are conducted by the zoo's nature education specialist Leif-August Kirs, who describes these fascinating bird species as follows: “A silent shadow equipped with sharp claws catches its prey in the dark of night. This scene, which sounds like a spicy folk tale, is nothing mythological - the shadow belongs to the strix. The owl is a wise bird that does not gossip, the owl heralds death, but sometimes it also brings luck, the owl leads souls to the afterlife. The more mysterious an animal is, the more supernatural powers are grafted onto it. On Zoo Strix Day, we confirm or disprove various owl-related legends. Knowing the owl doesn't make it any less mysterious, that's for sure."
At 11:30 a.m., feathers, eggs and many other interesting things of different strix species are on display at the discovery point.
At 12:00., on the Strix tour, you can watch the feeding of the birds and the enrichment of the living environment accompanied by exciting stories.
On the same Saturday, November 12, the zoo will start the Children's Saturdays campaign. On the second Saturday of every month from November to April, all children up to the age of 19 can enter the zoo with a free ticket purchased at the box office.
