The 1st of September welcomes students by raising Estonian flags. All state and local government institutions, legal entities, all households, companies, and organizations are invited to welcome students by raising the flag. Flags are raised no later than eight in the morning and lowered at sunset. If the flag is not lowered at sunset, it has to be illuminated in the dark. Some schools have already started their school year. Teachers and students are at the center of attention on Knowledge Day today.
The Minister of Education and Science, Tõnis Lukas Tõnis Lukas is an Estonian politician. , expressed his wishes to everybody associated with schools, school leaders, teachers, support specialists, students, and parents of the students to have an excellent start to the new school year. He also adds that there have been a lot of talks about introducing Estonian-language education in all schools. This confuses many people who, until now, have learned in Russian-language in schools. Knowing the national language opens all doors in Estonia.
Teaching and learning the Estonian language is essential, especially considering the prospects of the students. Then it will be easier to continue studying and start working later. To this end, the Government undertakes that learning in Estonian will be available in all schools and educational institutions from 2024 and all classes by the 2029/2030 school year. Preparations for the transition to Estonian-language education are already underway.
Lukas finishes his thoughts by saying, "I wish that the beginning of school requires positive effort from each of us and brings us timeless experiences, new knowledge, and skills! I wish everyone associated with the 1st of September a happy new school year. Satisfaction and happiness!"
